Educational Objectives
Post Graduate Year 4 (PGY-4) will focus on developing clinical skills in chronic care, addiction psychiatry and consultations to the medically ill in a variety of settings including general hospitals, and specialty centers.This will allow residents to further define their long-term career plans.
PGY-4 residents will continue obtaining psychotherapy training through supervision and seminars in: long-term and short-term psychodynamic therapy, including cognitive-behavior therapy, and interpersonal therapy, multi-person therapies including couple, family and group therapy through PGY-5.
Clinical Rotations
Each PGY-4 trainee in Psychiatry will have a member of the Faculty in the role of
PGY-4 Psychiatry Resident Clinical Training:
• 3 months of Chronic Care rotation taking care of patients with persistent and severe psychiatric illness. This rotation will be based at KCMH. Residents will rotate among the different teams to maximize exposure to mentors and supervisors. The rotation will consist of both inpatient and outpatient services.
• 3 months of Addiction Psychiatry treating patients with different substance use disorders. This rotation will be based at the addiction center. Residents training will be focusing on addiction assessment and treatment in a variety of modalities and settings with a large focus on addiction medicine. The rotation will consist of both inpatient and outpatient services.
• 6 months of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry consulting to other providers in a general hospital setting on a vast array of interfaces between psychiatry and other medical specialties. This rotation will be based in some of Kuwait general hospitals.
Half-Day of Academics Each Week
Throughout the year, our PGY-4 trainees will be given an academic half-day every week on Thursdays. The didactics will continue to cover specific and advanced diagnostic and therapeutic modalities of the different psychiatric illnesses, leadership and career management seminars.
