Educational Objectives
Post Graduate Year 5 (PGY-5) encourages an in-depth commitment to the pursuit of individual interests and perfection of clinical skills as preparation for a career in basic or clinical research, medical practice, teaching, administration or most probably a mix of these activities. During this period the resident assumes more leadership in education and supervision of junior colleagues while consolidating and further developing career track interest through electives and selectives including research. PGY-5 residents will continue obtaining psychotherapy training through supervision and seminars in: long-term and short-term psychodynamic therapy, including cognitive-behavior therapy, and interpersonal therapy, multi-person therapies including couple, family and group therapy.
Clinical Rotations
Each PGY-5 trainee in Psychiatry will have a member of the Faculty in the role of mentor throughout the year for the purpose of discussion, advice and other matters pertaining to their training and career.
PGY-5 Psychiatry Resident Training:
• 6 months of selectives which are limited to child & adolescent psychiatry; geriatric psychiatry; forensic psychiatry; psychosomatic medicine; psychiatric research; and addictions.
• 6 months of electives involving any aspects of training relevant to contemporary psychiatric practice, including research approved by the residency training committee. Electives may consist of rotations in sleep medicine, cultural psychiatry, chronic pain, reproductive psychiatry, psychoncology, and any type of psychotherapy training.
There could also be opportunities for international electives in accredited institutions, upon approval by the Residency Training Committee.
An approved research elective should meet the following conditions:
1. An application for a research elective is completed
2. The research project and rationale is clearly identified. A specific description of howthe time will be spent must be included with the application (i.e. literature search and preparation of review article for publication, analysis and write-up of previously collected data, etc.).
3. A direct supervisor must be identified, and he or she must provide a letter of support.
Full Academic Day Each Week
Throughout the year, our PGY-5 trainees will be given an academic full day each week on Thursdays. The didactics will continue to cover specific and advanced diagnostic and therapeutic modalities of the different psychiatric illnesses, leadership and career management seminars, how to teach and supervise, and transition to practice.
Senior Talk Seminar
Seniors present an overview of their years’ work to the Kuwait Board of Psychiatry residents and faculty in the summer of their graduating year. This day-long conference culminates the training experience. Each presentation allows integration of the elements of personal interest, core psychiatric knowledge and in-depth topic mastery in a collegial conference setting.
